Краткое содержание
Wuthering Heights is the only novel by the English writer Emily Brontë, published in 1847 under the pen name Ellis Bell. Early reviewers were disturbed by its violence and passion, but it has since become one of the most admired novels in English, quite unlike anything else of its time.
The story is set on the bleak Yorkshire moors and revolves around two houses: Wuthering Heights, an exposed farmhouse belonging to the Earnshaw family, and Thrushcross Grange, the more refined home of the Lintons. It is told in layers. A newcomer named Lockwood, who rents the Grange, becomes curious about his surly landlord, Heathcliff, and hears the history of the two households from the housekeeper, Nelly Dean. That history begins years earlier, when old Mr. Earnshaw brings home a ragged orphan boy from Liverpool. Heathcliff grows up alongside Earnshaw's daughter Catherine, and the two form an intense attachment, while her brother Hindley comes to hate him. When Catherine is drawn toward the comfort and status of the Linton world, the consequences ripple across both families and into the next generation.
The novel is dark, stormy and emotionally raw, with a strong sense of landscape and a structure that rewards attentive listening. It suits listeners who enjoy Gothic atmosphere, complex characters and love stories that are anything but gentle.
О книге
A tale of passion and vengeance set in the bleak Yorkshire moors, Wuthering Heights depicts the mutual love of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff till destruction and death rend the narration. There is no place for remorse in our antihero's breast as he sets about ruining the lives of those he considers responsible for his own misery. Yet cruelty is only to be met with compassion in the following generations. Romantic, impassioned and wild, it is also a dark journey in the human soul.
(Summary by Lady Maria).
