Free Science Fiction Audiobooks – H. G. Wells, Jules Verne and the Classics of Sci-Fi

These are full-length, free recordings of science fiction that is now in the public domain, from a 17th-century voyage to the Moon to the robots, dystopias and alien invasions of the early 20th century.

Most of the modern genre's big ideas started in these books: time travel, invasion from space, submarines and lost worlds, artificial people, and the totalitarian state. If you're new to classic sci-fi, start with The Time Machine. It's short and still surprising. For a long adventure, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and The Lost World are hard to stop listening to.

Good to know

  • Science of its time. Verne researched the technology of the 1860s carefully; Wells cared more about ideas than accuracy. Both are worth hearing for how people imagined the future.
  • Old attitudes. Some of these books, especially the adventure stories, reflect the colonial and racial views of their era.
  • Several recordings. Popular titles often have more than one free recording. The book page lists the others under "Other versions".
