I have found through the years that the best way to maximize options as well as $$$ is to have a mix of a little of everything. I seldom pay retail because I have found my style and can easily add to it from a range of price points.
Retail - I have learned that if I wait too long, my size will be gone. Therefore, I am quite happy getting a piece that I love at 30-40% off vs. missing it altogether waiting for the 75% off sale. Try to remember those coupons too for extra savings.
Discount Stores - This is where I look for accessories and sometimes shoes. With a bit of selectivity, I can grab something cute to complement my wardrobe, and I will get my cost per wear.
Second Hand - Consignment and Thrift are two ways that I add value and save tons of money. A large amount of the items I purchase are new. Most are nearly new. This is a great way to acquire something a little unique, well cared designer or dupes for way less $$$. Everything is sanitized, washed or dry cleaned before I use it.
