Early recordings of German female singers Vol. 3 (Senger-Bettaque and others) – The 43000 series (of Gramophone catalogue numbers)  - Irving S. Gilmore collection (3)

The Irving S. Gilmore Collection at the Yale University gives a tremendous amount (ca. 600 !)  of 7 inch / 17 cm recordings from the early days of recording. It contains  mainly Berliner records or early Gramophone &Typewriter records and can be found at

The seven inch format was the first to be used in the early days of recording since ca. 1896 (before that there were also 5 inch records in the USA). Berliner Records started with this format in Europe in 1899. 1902 the 10 inch format came up and soon afterwards the 12 inch format, which both succeeded soon the 7 inch records with about only 2 minutes recording time. 7 inch records were made until ca. 1906. Many of these records are very rare today, and some are sold, if they turn up, between 50 and 1000 Euro (or Dollar) for a piece. It is an opportunity that they are to be found in the internet, so that everyone can listen to them.

Please note that the sound quality is sometimes not what we are used by later recordings, but remember that these recordings are among the first efforts to record voice and music correctly. Many of the recordings survived only in a few copies, and most of them show signs of being played often. In many cases it is unlikely to find a better copy.

I have recorded many of these old recordings from the website for my own pleasure.  As they are given „raw“ on the website, I have declicked  and decrackled them  (and also normalized the recording volume).  I share them here with you, so that you can listen to them in a pleasant way. More recordings from this important and valuable collection will be published by me here on archive.org from time to time. The recording dates are given according to CHARM. My informations are given as Follows: Gramophone / Berliner Catalogue number, artist, title, Matrix Number, Date of recording in brackets. Photos of each title are included in the download section. More easily you can flip through the pictures here:
