The German Grammophon Company did not publish any complete operas during the shellac era after the initial acoustical recordings before the First World War (Carmen, Faust, etc.) However, they issued several fine abridged sets, called Kurzoper, between 1929 and 1930. All were sung in German and contained 4 or 5 discs in a tasteful album. The recordings were all conducted by Hermann Weigert from the Berlin State Opera, who was responsible for the arrangements, too. Orchestra and Chorus came from Berlin and also the singers, which included some of the best in Germany: Rosvaenge, Patzak, Völker, Soot, Schlusnus, Henke, Domgraf-Fassbaender, Ernster, Kandl, Wolf, Malkin, Marherr... The recordings show vivid and fine vocal interpretations as well as a spacious sound, which is quite optimal for the time. The following Kurzoper/Kurzoperette-sets are known: Lohengrin, Freischütz, Hänsel und Gretel, Zar und Zimmermann, Troubadour, Der Barbier von Sevilla, Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, Faust (Margarethe), Die Fledermaus, Die Czardasfürstin und Der Bettelstudent.
