Now that you know who you think should be your mentor, it’s time to ask them to be one. There could be two scenarios: where you know the person or where you don’t know the person or you know them at a distance. When you know the person, the only thing stopping you is ego. Our ego through its evolutionary history has taught us to compare status, compare salaries, compare position, and not to ever let anyone know that we need help.
Yet we all know in our hearts it isn’t true. Asking for help, rather asking someone for mentorship is a sign of strength. Knowing where you want to be and knowing the person who could help you get there, is a powerful step of self-awareness.
The other aspect of asking someone to be your mentor is when you know the person at a distance. When you do not know them in person however you are inspired by their social media content, or their contribution to their work, or the way they live their life. It could be a tricky task to get them to mentor you, assuming they might be getting a ton of requests asking for mentor-ship. I will walk you through all the ways you should reach them out, what you should never do while interacting with them, and also how I write to people to make sure I get a reply.
It’s an easy task to get to their inbox, yet it would require some effort to get them to respond, to let them know that you care about things that they care about, and more than anything else, to be okay when the worst case scenario of not getting a response happens.
