Pedro Gustavo Texeira (Director General Secretariat to the Supervisory Board, European Central Bank – ‘ECB’/Single Supervisory Mechanism – ‘SSM’), Jens-Hinrich Binder (Chair in Private Law, Commercial Law, Company Law and Securities Law, University of Tübingen), Brian Hayes (CEO, Banking & Payments Federation Ireland), Blanaid Clarke (McCann FitzGerald Chair of Corporate Law, Trinity College Dublin) and Christy Petit debate about Banking Union after Next Generation EU.
The online event took stock of the developments in the Banking Union (BU), nearly 10 years after its first mention in the roadmap for a more integrated financial framework. Significant progress has been achieved since the great financial crisis and euro area crisis. And yet, several challenges remain in the BU construction, and among them, fragmented banking markets and a missing pillar for common deposit insurance. The adoption of Next Generation EU after the Covid-19 pandemic to bolster the EU’s economic and social recovery may foster financial integration and benefit the BU. The panel includes perspectives from policy-making, practice and academia.
