内容简介
Jane Eyre is a novel by Charlotte Brontë, published in 1847 under the pen name Currer Bell. Presented as the autobiography of its heroine, it was an immediate success and remains one of the best-known novels in English.
Jane is an orphan raised unkindly by her aunt at Gateshead Hall, where she is treated as a burden. She is sent away to Lowood, a harsh charity school, where she endures cold, hunger and illness but also finds friendship and an education. As a young woman she takes a post as governess at Thornfield Hall, teaching the French ward of its owner, Edward Rochester. Rochester is moody, sarcastic and often absent, yet he and Jane are drawn to each other through frank conversation. Meanwhile, strange noises and unexplained incidents in the house suggest that Thornfield holds a secret, and Jane must decide how far she will go for love without giving up her own sense of right.
The novel was striking in its time for its first-person voice and its plain, passionate heroine, who insists on her equal worth despite her poverty and status. It combines romance, Gothic atmosphere and social criticism. Readers who enjoy strong heroines, moral dilemmas and atmospheric Victorian fiction will find it rewarding.
关于
Jane Eyre is not your typical romance. It is a story of a woman who struggles with a world in which she doesn't quite fit. Once finished with her schooling, and with no family that really cares of her she strikes out on her own as a governess. Jane Eyre searches for love, someone to care for her, and someone to care for, and finds it in unexpected places. (summary by Kri)
