In the first general account of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict told from the Palestinian perspective, Khalidi draws on new documents, many from his own family, which included Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, who was mayor of Jerusalem in 1899 when the Zionists called for a national home in Palestine. Khalidi, his great-great-great nephew, editor of the Journal of Palestine Studies, and author of books including Palestinian Identity and Brokers of Deceit, overturns the accepted narrative of the region as a tragic clash between two peoples claiming the same land and traces instead a full-blown colonial war. This was waged against the Palestinians first by the Zionists and then by Israel, with support from Britain and the U.S.
