And when you thought my uploads had finished becoming Progressively More Absurd and Hard-to-Ignore than the last, along comes this monstrosity.
KOIN (then channel 6, now channel 40) is the CBS affiliate for the Portland, Ore. area and as such, from the late 1980s to the mid-90s it carried "Garfield and Friends", which was one of my favourite shows growing up (to the chagrin of my parents). This is one of the "middle" tapes: I actually started recording cartoon audio in probably 1992 or so with the "Marsupliami" segments of "Raw Toonage" (yes, there really was a time when Disney programmes aired over CBS), and of course more Garfield audio. Those half-dozen or so previous tapes are long gone, consequently this one is now the earliest surviving one. I decided to pick it up again a few years later when "The Weird Al Show" premiered and consequently that tape includes its pilot episode amongst a few other things. The internal code name for this "project", if it could be so considered, eventually became "Going to the Gorge" starting with this tape, I guess because I listened to it once on a road trip through the Columbia River Gorge that probably extended to Pendleton and it stuck. (Don't ask. The dumbass things that entertain you when you're 11.) Hence, the scenic cover photographs of the region.
Since NTSC (system M) channel 6's audio track (87.75 MHz) falls within the passband of most FM broadcast receivers, this meant that it was readily listenable and recordable albeit at a lower volume level and in mono due to modulation and subcarrier placement differences between TV and conventional FM stations. This ended, with few exceptions, in 2009 with the ATSC cutover. Being that it was collected using a crappy DC-bias Emerson CTR911C boombox, this recording is heavily contaminated with rumble and dropouts and the signal-noise ratio is very poor, even though it was on a Maxell "Epitaxial" high-grade ferric. The Emerson's FM frontend had piss-poor image rejection, so although the KOIN signal arrived at nearly full quieting you will also hear RF overload crosstalk from KWJJ (99.5 MHz) and nearby KMHD (89.1 MHz) throughout. I have no idea why side 2 ended up six seconds longer than side 1.
The crowd assembles....
