Sauvignon Blanc is the Kim Kardashian of grapes as it is a famous variety from a pretty famous family. It likely originates from the Loire and is the offspring of Savagnin and a sibling of Chenin Blanc, as well as closely related to Semillon. Together with Cabernet Franc, it is a parent of the most widely planted variety in the world: Cabernet Sauvignon. Scientists believe that it was a spontaneous field crossing in the 18th century in Bordeaux. Sauvignon Blanc is quite easy to identify in a tasting as it has a very distinct flavor profile. When it is from a cool climate or is unripe it smells of green bell pepper and grass because of the Methoxypyrazines in the wine. Is – of course, is a flavor it shares with unripe Cabernet Sauvignon. Another flavor group are thiols aka mercaptans. Mercaptans can smell like Grapefruit, Passion Fruit, or … yes … the famous cat's pee. Levels are often elevated in wines from New Zealand but there are different ways to influence the intensity in the vineyard or in the winery in all wine regions of the world. Sauvignon Blanc for a long time was very closely associated with the Loire for light fresh wine or Bordeaux for dry blends and sweet wines but in the 1980s and 90s Sauvignon Blanc from NZ took over the world by storm and the grape variety is planted in most wine growing countries. It is the 7th most planted variety overall and the third most planted white variety. The Sauvignon Blanc Vine flowers early and the grapes have a long (late) maturity period. It is a highly vigorous variety.
