Tóm tắt

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by the English writer Jane Austen, published in 1813. An early draft, written in the late 1790s, was called First Impressions, a title that hints at the book's central concern. It has become one of the most widely read and adapted novels in the English language.

The Bennets are a gentry family in rural Hertfordshire with five unmarried daughters and a problem: their house and land are entailed to a male cousin, so the girls' futures depend largely on marrying well. Mrs. Bennet is therefore delighted when a wealthy young man, Charles Bingley, rents a nearby estate. Bingley is soon drawn to Jane, the gentle eldest daughter, but his friend Fitzwilliam Darcy makes a poor impression at a local ball with his cold, superior manner. The second daughter, Elizabeth, quick-witted and confident in her own judgment, takes a strong dislike to him, a feeling reinforced by stories she hears from the charming officer George Wickham. As the families' paths keep crossing, both Elizabeth and Darcy are forced to question what they think they know.

Austen's sharp dialogue, ironic narration and memorable supporting characters make the book a pleasure to hear. It suits anyone who enjoys romantic comedy, social satire and stories about character and self-knowledge.

Giới thiệu

Pride and Prejudice is the most famous of Jane Austen’s novels, and its opening is one of the most famous lines in English literature - “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Its manuscript was first written between 1796 and 1797, and was initially called First Impressions, but was never published under that title. Following revisions it was published on 28 January 1813 by the same Mr. Egerton of the Military Library, Whitehall, who had brought out Sense and Sensibility. Like both its predecessor and Northanger Abbey, it was written at Steventon Rectory. (Summary from Wikipedia)
