Patricia Burke on Why We Must Oppose so-called "Smart" Meters

WZBC's Victor Robert Venckus recently interviewed electrosmog activist Patricia Burke on his weekly radio program, Expanding Awareness (10-11am Saturdays). The theme was what's wrong with so-called "smart" meters and why we must oppose them. Burke, herself a victim of electrochemical sensitivity, has mounted an encyclopedic body of knowledge about these newly developed devices, along with their enthusiastic promotion by pro-corporate forces. Water, gas, and electric utilities and their loyal regulatory servants want to put "smart" meters on every home and apartment. These devices typically transmit a microwave RF signal very frequently, for example every 2 seconds, 24 hours a day, communicating with each other in a network, and ultimately reaching the pertinent utility. The utilities get lots of information about you, and can shut you off at will. Most utilities love the idea because they don't need meter readers any more. Never mind the injustice. The health effects are not even investigated. The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, chaired by Ann Berwick (wife of gubernatorial candidate Donald Berwick) is one such loyal regulatory servant. It is mandating a program of universal adoption of "smart" metering, and also a draconian scheme for opting out that requires huge payments by its victims. To soften the PR problem, the DPU has relabeled "smart" meters with another acronym, "CAMP."
