The Presence of Sound

Which sounds will shape the collective memory of COVID-19?

Sound is an important part of life, of my life. Whether we like it or not

our hearing is on during the entire day and night. With our hearing we

have a permanent connection to this world. A connection that sometimes

bothers us and sometimes gives us pleasure. Even if sounds regularly

aggravate us, we will still feel very strange when these sounds are no

longer present.

Due to my own interest in sound, I want to focus on its meaning. What do

I hear…? What is the influence of sound on life, on my life?

During my research I started collecting data which consists of field

recordings of sounds from my daily life. The COVID-19 crisis however, has

a big influence on this. I want to know if my sounds can be lead into a

collective memory that we all experience as victims of these strange times.

These atmospheric impressions can lead to a collective memory of sounds.

Hopefully these will transform into a story; the story of the collective

experience of the present.

By presenting various sound fragments of this time within a digital

landscape, I create the opportunity of making a new soundscape. The users

choice based on sound triggering with elements and mouse interaction

will lead to that new soundscape.

In this way I create a new soundscape “`The New Normal” through the

collective memory of COVID-19.
