Some sites have a lot of content. It needs good navigation and a certain familiarity of layout that people will readily understand. There are a lot of resources about good web site design briefs. The Open University has a very helpful slide show. Create content for purpose. The best thing to do is go and lurk. Have a look at what others are doing and then add your creative ideas.
