MATT KRIVICH & JAMES MACKLIN Life After Hurricane Sandy at the Bowery Mission When Hurricane Sandy hit New York City at the end of October 2012, many New Yorkers were not prepared for the damage this force of nature caused. Some of the hardest hit were many of the city's homeless and displaced persons and people who had never imagined being homeless were literally cast outside overnight. In the first part of the program Angela McKenzie speaks with Matt Krivich, Director of the Bowery Mission in Manhattan's lower east side, to talk about how the Mission was able to successfully serve its' usual volume of guests alongside people who never experienced homelessness or have been in close quarters with the homeless, until Sandy forced them out of their homes. In the second half of the show, Angela revisits a conversation she had in 2011 with one of the Bowery Mission's living legends and its' Director of Outreach, James MacKlin. Macklin gives a personal and entertaining account of his life story, including the early successes and excesses which resulted in his drug addiction and other misfortunes. Through the kindness of a stranger and the grace of God, he found his way to the Mission to fully recover and now lives a life of service to others who are challenged by life's hardships.
