@Ocean_Visions is committed to accelerating research, development, and testing of ocean-based technologies that might safely draw down and sequester carbon dioxide -- commonly referred to as ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (“Ocean-based CDR”). Controlled field trials are an essential component of a complete R&D program because they provide the best information to evaluate efficacy and impacts in a real environment. Planning, testing, development, and any potential future deployment of ocean-based CDR methods also requires sound and inclusive governance systems. In this session we will explore this process of advancing R&D and explore potential opportunities for workshop participants to get involved in this process.
Recommended readings from workshop: *Beginner Reading: If you’re new to the topic and short on time, we recommend that you start here. As you review these resources, consider the following questions: Where do you see gaps in knowledge? Do you agree/disagree with the First Order Priorities? What would you add to or change about this road map? Understand the major pathways to carbon dioxide removal on the Ocean Visions website (https://oceanvisions.org/ocean-based-carbon-dioxide-removal/) Identify some of the key stakeholders and the barriers to engaging them (https://www2.oceanvisions.org/roadmaps/growing-public-support/)
*Intermediate Reading: If you already have some experience with ocean-based CDR or you have more time to go beyond the beginner materials, we recommend that you go through these materials. As you do, consider: What would success look like in ensuring public interests are taken into account in a code of conduct? What would success look like in ensuring the balance of quick action (e.g., permitting) and public/environmental considerations and safeguards? Skim through these guiding principles on developing a code of conduct for ocean-based CDR
*Expert Reading: If you have extra time or you’re already familiar with the concepts from the previous sections, please review this resource. Consider: What role do you see yourself playing in this landscape? Watch Climate Change Academy’s social acceptance and ethical considerations on ocean-based CDR (https://vimeo.com/508150906)
