"Actor, comedian and television host Trevor Noah hosts the Global Teacher Prize 2018 ceremony, a celebration of all teachers making a difference to children worldwide and an honouring of the global community of educators united by a shared belief - in the power of education.
During the ceremony, the winner of the $1m Global Teacher Prize is crowned. The UK's Andria Zafirakou, of Alperton Community School in Brent took this year's prize for her outstanding work in one of Britain's most ethnically diverse and impoverished areas, learning the basics of 35 different languages to communicate with as many of the school's students as possible and ensure their educational needs are being met, while familiarising herself with their personal situations to ensure no child is left behind. ""Tonight, it's not about one person it's about celebrating all the teachers, and recognising the important role they play in shaping the future for our children."" Her work in bringing creativity and energy to every department has been recognised as a key factor in the school's rise to being one of the top performers in the country by colleagues, students, and national inspectors - and finally, the Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize judging panel."
