The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a novel by Mark Twain, published in 1876. Twain based the fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, on Hannibal, the Mississippi River town where he grew up, and he drew on memories of his own boyhood and friends in creating the characters.

Tom is a clever, restless orphan who lives with his Aunt Polly and his well-behaved half-brother, Sid. He hates school and Sunday services, fights with new boys and spends his time inventing adventures. In one famous scene he turns the punishment of whitewashing a fence into a privilege that other boys pay to share. He courts Becky Thatcher, the new girl in town, and plays at being a pirate with friends. Things become serious when Tom and Huckleberry Finn, the son of the town drunkard, sneak into a graveyard at midnight and witness a crime, leaving them with a dangerous secret that troubles Tom's conscience.

The novel blends comedy, nostalgia and suspense, and it gently mocks adult pieties and small-town respectability. It introduced Huck, who would narrate Twain's later and more ambitious novel. Readers of many ages enjoy it as a lively picture of childhood freedom, mischief and growing up in nineteenth-century America.
