Summary

Peter Pan is J. M. Barrie's novel version of his famous stage play, which premiered in London in 1904. The book was published in 1911 under the title Peter and Wendy and has been known simply as Peter Pan ever since.

The story begins in the London nursery of the Darling family, where Wendy and her younger brothers John and Michael are looked after by a Newfoundland dog named Nana. One night a boy in a suit of leaves slips through the window looking for his lost shadow. He is Peter Pan, who has decided never to grow up, and with the help of the fairy Tinker Bell he teaches the children to fly and leads them away to Neverland. There they meet the Lost Boys, mermaids and the warrior princess Tiger Lily, and become entangled in Peter's long feud with the pirate Captain Hook, who is himself haunted by a ticking crocodile.

What sets the novel apart from its many adaptations is Barrie's narrating voice: playful, teasing and often surprisingly melancholy about childhood, memory and what it means to leave both behind. Children enjoy the adventure, pirates and fairy magic, while adults tend to notice the bittersweet undercurrent. It makes a good family listen and a rewarding revisit for anyone who knows the story only from film.
