Summary

Dracula is a Gothic horror novel by the Irish writer Bram Stoker, published in 1897. Although vampire stories existed before it, this book established most of the images people still associate with the vampire, and its title character has appeared in countless films and adaptations.

The novel is told entirely through documents: journal entries, letters, newspaper clippings and a ship's log. It begins with Jonathan Harker, a young English solicitor, travelling to Transylvania to help a nobleman named Count Dracula buy property near London. Harker's stay at the remote castle turns into a nightmare as he realizes that his host is something other than human and that he himself is a prisoner. The story then moves to England, where Harker's fiancée Mina and her friend Lucy Westenra begin to experience strange events after a ship runs aground at Whitby. Lucy's suitors, her doctor John Seward and the Dutch professor Abraham Van Helsing gradually piece together what is happening and set out to stop the Count.

The shifting viewpoints build suspense in a way that suits listening, and the book combines horror with a portrait of late Victorian anxieties about science, faith and the foreign. It will appeal to fans of horror, Gothic fiction and classic adventure.

About

The classic vampire story by Bram Stoker revolves around a struggle between good and evil, tradition and modernity, and lust versus chastity. The author didn’t invent vampires, but his novel has so captured the public’s imagination that he is rightly considered their popularizer. Listen and you will meet not only the Count himself, but heroes Jonathan Harker and Abraham Van Helsing, plus an array of madmen, psychiatrists, and fair maidens who cross paths with the fanged menace.
