Summary
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a children's novel by Lewis Carroll, the pen name of the Oxford mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. It grew out of a story he told to the young Alice Liddell and her sisters on a boating trip in 1862, and it was published in 1865 with illustrations by John Tenniel.
The story begins on a drowsy afternoon when Alice spots a White Rabbit in a waistcoat, checking a pocket watch, and follows him down a rabbit hole. She lands in a world where the usual rules of size, logic and manners no longer hold. Drinking from a bottle or nibbling a cake makes her shrink or grow, and she meets a string of memorable characters, including the grinning Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar on his mushroom, the Mad Hatter and the March Hare at their endless tea party, and the furious Queen of Hearts with her croquet game. Throughout, Alice tries to keep her bearings while everyone around her argues in riddles, puns and parodies of lessons Victorian children knew by heart.
The book's playful language and absurd humour have made it one of the most quoted and adapted stories in English. It works on several levels, delighting children with its oddities and amusing adults with its wordplay and logic games, so it suits family listening.
