About
John Ferling discusses his book, Apostles of Revolution, at Politics and Prose on 6/2/18.
Ferling’s latest study of the American Revolution is as much a history of the eighteenth-century idea of revolution as it is a triptych of three men central to the American uprising. Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, and James Monroe fought not only for freedom from Britain but hoped to launch republican and egalitarian movements throughout Europe. Ferling, author of Whirlwind and the award-winning A Leap in the Dark, traces each man’s thinking as it evolved, showing Jefferson, for instance, initially proclaiming that an ideal nation consists of small, independent farmers whose representatives would rule with a light hand, only to be disillusioned when the electorate chose less-educated candidates. Meanwhile, the French Revolution fell into anarchy, becoming a cautionary tale for the Americans.
