A documentary by Mmoloki Chrystie about our project "Revealing The Creek". I was commissioned by Raybel Charters and Arthouse ventures to write an immersive promenade play about 1000 of Deptford history- we were interested in the intersection of climate and social justice, the lesser known stories and lesser heard voices (the ordinary working people, not the usual Kings and Queens or the rich and powerful) plus we wanted to give voice to the flora and fauna of the Creek too, so the characters in the play I wrote included Ignatius Sancho and Olaudah Equiano (both instrumental in the abolition of slavery), John Gast (began the British trade union movement) Lizzie (landlady of the tavern) Alice (lady's maid to Queen Elizabeth 1st) plus sailors from all over the world, artists and fortune tellers, a swan, a mitten crab, a wildflower and the mud itself was given a voice. Three wild Spirits of the Creek and a woman captain took us on a time travelling adventure to try to learn from the past in order to co-create a brighter future together. Under a nearly full Hunters Moon, our play was performed by a brilliant cast of you local actors, directed by Paul Ainsworthproduced by Kelsey Yuhara. Studying hyper local history makes you realise how fortunate we are and what a debt we owe to those who came and fought before us- we really do stand on the shoulders of giants! And we can repay them by living our lives well, by continuing to fight for justice and equality and also by having fun and remembering to dance, sing and be merry.
