It should come as no surprise that writers and editors at the Book Review do a lot of outside reading â and, even among ourselves, we like to discuss the books that are on our minds. On this weekâs episode, Gilbert Cruz talks to the critic Jennifer Szalai and the editors Sadie Stein and Joumana Khatib about what theyâve been reading (and in some cases listening to) recently. For Szalai, that includes a novel sheâs revisiting some two decades after she first read it: Kazuo Ishiguroâs âThe Remains of the Day,â which sheâs listening to this time around as an audiobook. âIt has been wonderful,â she says. âThe narration is great and itâs told in the first person, which I think is actually an ideal feature â at least for me, when Iâm listening to an audiobook. It feels a bit like a conversation or a story, a personal story, thatâs being related to me. And itâs been so long since I read the book that there are certain details that I hadnât remembered that keep coming up. And so itâs been a nice experience. Iâm going through it slowly. I sort of listen to it in little snatches here and there.â Here are the books discussed on this weekâs episode: âThe Remains of the Day,â by Kazuo Ishiguro âLook at Me,â by Anita Brookner âThe Pigeon Tunnel,â by John le CarrĂ© âRun Towards the Danger,â by Sarah Polley âThe Color of Water,â by James McBride âThe Dirty Tricks Department,â by John Lisle âSpare,â by Prince Harry We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Reviewâs podcast in general.
