Viewing cat videos boosts energy and positive emotions, IU study finds If you're depressed...watch a cat video on You Tube. That's celebrity cat \Nala\ and people who watch her videos and videos like hers...get energy boosts...feel positive emotions and have decreased negative feelings. A new study by Indiana University says so. Nearly 7-thousand people took part in the research watching videos of Nala and Henri, Le Chat Noir. Professor Jessica Gall Myrick says participants reported having fewer negative emotions, such as anxiety, annoyance and sadness. And even when they watched cat videos instead of doing work or studying, the pleasure they got from watching outweighed any guilt about procrastinating. 36-percent of the study participants described themselves as a âcat personâ while about 60-percent liked both cats and dogs. Myrick had help in her research from Mike Bridavsky who happens to live in Indiana. Lil Bub's rise to fame came partly because of her deformities. Her tongue hangs out of her mouth and her eyes bulge out of her head. In 2014, people posted nearly 2-million videos of cats like Lil Bub to YouTube and they've racked up more than 26-billion views. Cat videos have more views per video than any other category of YouTube content. Professor Myrick says the emotional pay-off of watching cat videos even while procrastinating may actually help people take on tough tasks afterward. The results also suggests online cat videos might be used as a form of low-cost pet therapy. The study appears in the latest issue of Computers in Human Behavior. For each participant who took the survey, Myrick donated 10 cents to Lil Bubâs foundation called Lil Bubâs Big Fund for the ASPCA. It's raised more than $100,000 for needy animals.
