So... Why should you visit Monemvasia Island in Greece?
You've probably seen at least one drone photo of this medieval travel destination and made you want to know more about Monemvasia.
Monemvasia is a fortress town carved in stone a millennium and a half ago, at the base of a tall rock in the Mediterranean Sea, in the Peloponnese Peninsula, South of Greece.
It was connected to the mainland only 50 years ago, through a 200m long bridge, thus making the access to Monemvasia so much easier than our ancestors had it. Back then, it could have only been reached by boat, making the invaders think twice before attacking it.
Nevertheless, it was still under the rule of the Romans, Venetians and Ottomans.
It has developed into a very special place to be, as the old fortified town was rebuilt, without touching too much of the original look and feel.
No cars or motorcycles are allowed on the island by law. The charming streets, perfect for evening walks within Monemvasia Town are as narrow as they originally were.
For me, Monemvasia was the most ROMANTIC place I've visited in Greece. And my whole stay in this old fortress town was so much more than just a regular vacation, it was actually a lifechanging experience.
One of the best things about Monemvasia is that it's pretty close to Elafonisos Island, a paradise-like, Caribbean style beach, an amazing spot for spending a whole day on the golden sand, surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
