Come explore Union Square park as it is today with renowned architect and designer David Rockwell hear about how public space influences public life. Learn how the park looked and felt when it was Boss Tweed's stomping ground, and hear how he went head to head with one of the world's great parks designers, Frederick Law Olmstead. Visit the site of the old Tammany Hall, get a personal tour of the W Union Square designed by the Rockwell Group, and see how this park has been the stage for some of New York's most important protests, celebrations and public gatherings for nearly 200 years.

• This tour can be taken any day of the week, at any time. The famous Union Square Greenmarket operates Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 8 am and 6pm. The market does not impede the tour, but it might slow you down just a bit - especially if you're tempted by beautiful, organic fruits and vegetables.

• During the Christmas season there is a holiday market that operates on the south side of the park.

• This is a short Detour, easy to fit in during a busy day!
