panel discussion held at SFPL about Eric Hoffer's life and writings, particularly The True Believer. An autodidact of working class roots, Eric Hoffer worked as a migrant worker, following the harvests in California, and then a longshoreman on the docks of San Francisco, which was around the time he started writing. He became known as a "longshoreman philosopher" and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983. His first of ten books, The True Believer (1951), became widely recognized as a classic.
