The story was featured on Al Arabyia and aired on Mosaic August 14 2008. As Mohammed Omer returned home from London in earlier this summer he must have felt a great sense of accomplishment. He was the youngest recipient ever in his early twenties. His work for various international press outlets has earned him respect among his peers and his emotional reports via the blog Rafah Today led people to nick name him, âvoice for the voicelessâ an unofficial spokesperson for some 1.5 million people living in Gaza. (Story by John Pilger here) But as Mohammed Omer tried to return home from London to Gaza he was detained by the Israeli Security Forces, and what happened next has caused an international outcry. He was stripped naked at gunpoint, interrogated, kicked and beaten for more than four hours then transferred to a hospital. He now faces surgery to repair nerve damage. In April another Palestinian reporter was attacked and this time killed. Amnesty International said the 24-year-old Reuterâs camera man, Fadel Shanah was the victim of a targeted attack and another civilian taking no part in attacks on Israelâs forces. Israel has now said there will be no investigation.
