Thanks to the kind thoughts of another Dime user, I learned about this event and its partner in a week's time - Room 40, a pair of concert performances being put on by local arts venue the Substation (built in an abandoned rail power generator in the industrial/port section of town, a true sense of hipsterdom) to host a few icons of the Japanese experimental music scene (mostly). It seemed like exactly my thing, and after some struggles (more in that in the Jim O'Rourke upload) I was able to get there for Eiko Ishibashi's set. She's best known for her work with the soundtrack of critically acclaimed movie Drive My Car (2021), but has quite a strong musical career beyond that.

For her set, Ishibashi was able to move through a few different styles of electronic ambience - really well, as far as I was concerned, although some pundits at the train station afterward were less impressed. She started out with a series of slow string drones punctuated by little samples that faded in and out, just out of reach of recognition; later, the drones were augmented by martenot-type rushes of sound. My favourite part of the set came in the middle, where the sound moved to a combination of frenetic jazz drums and live reed sounds. Following this up with loud strings (there's some slight clipping here, sorry about that), the closer was an ambient patch with vocal samples and synth work that set us down well. A really expressive performance and a great closer to the night.
