Chauncey Hugh Stigand wrote this book of 29 East African folktales together with his wife, Nancy Stigand. Stigard was an officer in the British Army and a British colonial official in Africa; before writing this book, he had served in British Somaliland and in British East Africa, and he would later serve in northern Africa.
