Yayoi Ikawa, originally from Tokyo Japan now resides in NYC awing listeners with her marvelous piano playing. She performs her original compositions with any number of group contexts including trio and quintet with two horn players. Starting at the age of three she quickly became an apt classical pianist, and though she stopped playing at age thirteen one might be able to tell that she never lost her talent when she started again in 1998. Since that time she moved from her native Japan to New York City to study the music of improvisation, Jazz.

Beginning her studies at New School University in Manhattan she began working with and playing with such masters of jazz as Reggie Workman, Charlie Persip, Buster Williams, Geri Allen, Roy Campbell Jr. and Billy Bang. Now in the final days of her studying at NSU she is more than apt to call herself a proffesional. After just 5 short years of playing and learning improvisation she is a master. Her compositions only hint at the genius that her improvisations reveal.
