PURPLE PASSAGES INNOVATIVE, MELODIC, GUITAR-BASED INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC by Lyle Workman

Beginning in the late '80s with his own group, Bourgeois Tagg, Lyle Workman has pushed the limits of what could be expected of a modern guitarist.

Bourgeois Tagg was recognized as an inventive group that staked out its own musical and lyrical territory. The band recorded two albums for Island records, the second of which included the hit single "I Don't Mind at All," co-written by Workman. After a series of worldwide tours, Bourgeois Tagg called it quits, allowing Workman to pursue new musical directions.

After disbanding the group, Workman's considerable talents were applied to a series of projects with artists as diverse as Frank Black, Jellyfish, Todd Rundgren, and jazz legend Tony Williams.

His influence can be heard on Rundgren's 1989 album Nearly Human, the 1993 Jellyfish release Spilt Milk, as well as the most recent Frank Black recording, Teenager of the Year. After touring extensively with Rundgren, and Black, Workman has released his first solo CD, Purple Passages.

Although an instrumental album, it would be a mistake to say that Purple Passages is a solo guitar record. Workman's tuneful orchestration takes the listener on a joyous trip, so intoxicating that vocals are not missed.

You don't have to be a musician to appreciate this music.

Praise for Purple Passages

Vernon Reid, guitarist for Living Colour: "Lyle Workman is a fresh new voice on guitar. His arranging, composing, and improvising are all world class. By that I mean, the cat's pajamas!"

Frank Black, solo artist and founder of The Pixies: "I've been fortunate enough to have worked with Lyle both in the studio and on stage. His extreme talent does not weigh him down-he's a player who bounds across the song with enthusiasm in confident freedom. Lyle Workman is an awesome guitar player, period."

Tony Williams, legendary drummer with Tony Williams Lifetime and Miles Davis: "Lyle Workman is my kind of musician. He's inventive, intuitive, and on the edge."

Andy Sturmer, Jellyfish: "Lyle's contribution to [Jellyfish album] Spilt Milk was absolutely essential. His sound is raw, yet refined, intelligent, yet always filled with reckless abandon."

Mike Keneally, guitarist and keyboardist with Frank Zappa, and columnist for Guitar Player Magazine: "Everything Lyle touches turns to gold. This could well be the finest instrumental music being produced today."

Dave Gregory, guitarist, keybordist, and vocalist for XTC: "Lyle Workman's astonishing album Purple Passages reveals a musician of consummate skill, creativity and taste. He virtually single-handedly crafts a great bunch of tunes with meticulous care, abandoning the usual guitar hero clichs in favor of melody, texture, and feel. Purple Passages should put Lyle Workman's name on anybody's list of favorite players-he's already on mine."
