If there's one thing that the band Kahoots has never lent itself to very well it's stylistic labeling. Beginning as an acoustic duo and evolving into a six-piece rock band, Kahoots proves that the creative muse is prone to mutation. Begun in 1995 by founding members Rob Myers and Elisha Wiesner, Kahoots debuted with a series of self-produced cassettes featuring both members on acoustic guitars. After various additions and subtractions of talent, the band by early 1999, had settled on the perfect combination defining their unique sound. In addition to Myers and Wiesner, recording engineer Charlie Esposito on keyboards, J.J. O'Connell on drums, Jon Larsen on bass, and Nina Muckerheide on viola - Kahoots are now complete. The acoustic sounds have gone electric, and the sound has evolved into a pastiche of harmonic guitar chords and dissonant modal progressions. For now, the members of Kahoots are focusing on the fun aspects of music rather than the financial rewards, since, as Wiesner points out, "It's not about the money, because we don't make any." Rather, the band's top priority is enjoyment and keeping up with the one-album-a-year schedule. And with the newly released Ghosting' on 08/31/01, Kahoots take one more artistic giant step forward from their two most recent and well received releases, Yellow, Yellow' (2000), and The New Speed of Sound' (1999). "Once you get to the point where the next album isn't better, says Wiesner, "you should stop." But with the incredible sounds of Ghosting' in the air, you can bet that point is still light-years away. And Kahoots FINALLY appear to be on the verge of something huge. Simply... they can no longer be ignored by the Rulers In Suits . Somebody inevitably will clue these people in. It's now just a matter of "when"!
