Charles Perrault (1628 - 1703) was a French Civil servant, member of the Academy of Sciences and author.  After he lost his post in 1695 he retired to family life and in 1697 published Tales and Stories of the Past with Morals (Histoires ou Contes du Temps passé), better know today as Tales of Mother Goose (Les Contes de ma Mère l’Oye).  This seminal publication was the model for the works of later writers of fairy tales, such as the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. .
