Israel’s Kadima party has claimed victory in the country’s general election. The party, set up by Ariel Sharon before his stroke in January, took 28 of the 120 seats in parliament. Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert vowed to carry on Ariel Sharon’s work of establishing permanent borders for Israel by 2010. The Kadima leader told his party he was prepared to hold peace talks with Palestine. Palestinians have urged Mr Olmert not to set Israel's borders unilaterally. Mr Taylor disappeared from his villa 48 hours after Nigeria agreed to hand him over to Liberia to face a UN tribunal. Mr Taylor was indicted on 17 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, for his alleged backing for Sierra Leone's rebels. He resigned in 2003 under a deal to end the Liberian civil war, going into exile in south-eastern Nigeria. The World Health Organisation said only 1.3 million people in poor countries were being treated at the end of last year. Around three million people die of AIDS each year and WHO believes the Global Fund programme prevented between 250,000 and 350,000 deaths in 2005. They said it has helped lay the groundwork for achieving the goal of nearly universal access by 2010, set by the Group of Eight leading industrialised nations last year. Audio and video evidence revealed Dr Anil Sabani telling a pregant woman she was carrying a female foetus and that it would be taken care of. Termination on the grounds of gender alone was outlawed in India in 1994 although this is the first time medical professionals have been jailed in such a case. Experts in India say female foeticide stems partly from the belief that a female child is considered inferior and a liability. Small urban centres of less than half a million people where water and sanitation are already inadequate are likely to be affected most by a rapid growth in population. According to the report these small towns and cities tend to be overlooked when it comes to aid assistance. UN-HABITAT reported that most countries in Africa are currently falling behind in attaining the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to reduce the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by half by 2015.
