The Pulitzer Prize winning book about loss, betrayal and bad decisions makes it way to theaters. This is a review of the new film, The Goldfinch...[[]]Theo is haunted by the death of his mother when he was just a boy but feels comfort knowing he has something from those final moments...even though it doesn't belong to him...[[]]Director John Crowley and writer Peter Straughan bring this best-selling favorite to the big screen......and apparently stay fairly true to author Donna Tartt's original.Unfortunately, that's not necessarily a good thing as this long film...almost two-and-a-half hours......plods and bounces between time periods incoherently before finally picking up steam...but by that time...it's way too late. It's led by a talented cast that seems to be just as befuddled by what's going on......Ansel Elgort stars as adult Theo who spends a lot of time staring vacant and expressionless......with apparently an amazing tolerance for hard drugs and booze.Nicole Kidman is fine as the wealthy socialite who briefly becomes Theo's guardian...and Aneurin Barnard is the adult version of Boris, his best friend. There's also Sarah Paulson, Luke Wilson and Jeffrey Wright who're also fine. The real standouts were the kids...young Theo played by Oakes Fegley, Aimee Lawrence as Pippa, Theo's unrequited love......and Finn Wolfhard as young Boris...the story's most interesting character who shows up too late in the film and doesn't get enough screen time.If you're a fan of the book...the attention to the original may be a selling point...and it does look great. And to be fair I talked to some folks that attended the same screening who enjoyed it......but between yawns expressed many of same points I've addressed. And for that, I give The Goldfinch two stars out of five on the Rob Rating Scale...unlike the title, this is no masterpiece.
