What compels someone to write and perform Music?
What possesses two reasonably intelligent people to make the sacrifices necessary to produce the music featured on this web page and hopefully revealing itself through your speakers?
The answer is love. Love of this art. Love of truth, and of the truly beautiful. Our music is our therapy. It is our release. Our Resolve is that our music will be heard. This is a project filled with influences. No piece of music is truly original. We're not ashamed to communicate through the use of recognizable forms. To the astute listener, these influences are in bold relief. Influence then transforms into inspiration. The result of the inspiration is this collection of tributes of musical landscapes and portraits; we call Resolve.
Music is my mistress, Ellington once said. Yes, this mistress, this muse is the source of our inspiration. She resides somewhere equidistant between mind and heart, between the will and the soul. Our calling is to listen to her voice, to keep her good company. As Duke says, I look forward to her every gesture. Music is a labor of love. For our trouble we're well compensated. She provides us this tool, this art, this system. Her gift is the ability to touch hearts. To heal the soul.
Joe Cristina and Victor Cajiao
Simpatico's debut released in 1995, Resolve, is the culmination of a 20-year musical friendship between Cristina and Cajiao. The name "Simpatico" was chosen because it aptly describes the pair's unique similarities, and on a larger scale, the relationship that Simpatico creates with its audiences. A combination of friendship, accessibility, romanticism, artistry, and just plain good vibes -- such are the feelings of Resolve.
When performing live, Simpatico has utilized from three to nine players, depending on the desired program. Featured Simpatico musicians include Larry Kester on keyboards, guitarist Ed Scannell, bassist Todd Smith, and drummer/percussionist Brian Zsupnik. Producer Cajiao notes, "We like to have players come in and put their own signature on the project. We don't have a vision etched in stone... the music comes alive on its own." Cristina agrees adding, "we want Simpatico's music to be accessible enough to grab you yet deep enough to keep you."
The cover art for Resolve was chosen because it captures the essence of the female muse that inspires Simpatico music. Awash in orchestral colors and textured rhythms, Resolve honors the womanly elegance and earthiness expressed on its cover by artist Mary Zarbano.
Having performed at area clubs for the past two decades, Cajiao and Cristina are working man musicians, with a healthy appreciation of diverse musical contributions from the world of jazz, latin, and pop music. "Sometimes it feels like we're the guys on the periphery of the scene," says Cristina, "we're more interested in having a good time making music than copping an attitude or contriving an image. We really believe in the music and in each other."
Joe and Victor are currently writing new material in hopes of a second release within the next year. Stay tuned as the muse engages us once again.
