"The Evaporated Kid was one of about 100,000 men who abandoned comfortable lives to climb mountains and walk very long kilometers towards the far Canadian north to look for gold during the Klondike gold rush at the turn of the twentieth century. There are two versions of the story behind his name – one says that he was so skinny that he looked translucent, almost evaporated. Another says that he found gold but spent it so fast that it evaporated. One or neither of those stories may be true, but neither will be told, because no one knows who he was, what his given name was or where he came from. A century later, his only remainder is that nickname. He probably would have had a good story to tell."
