United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has called on the Palestinian Authority to take a firm stand against terrorism following Monday’s suicide bombing in Israel. Nine people were killed and more than 50 injured in the blast at a Tel Aviv restaurant. Militant group Islamic Jihad said it was behind the bombing. A UN spokesperson said the Palestinian Authority was responsible for preventing such attacks. =O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O= An overcrowded bus has crashed in eastern Mexico killing 57 people. The tour bus plunged more than 650 feet into a ravine on a highway between Mexico City and the Gulf coast city of Veracruz. Police have blamed either brake failure or driver error for the crash. The bus, equipped to hold 46 passengers, was carrying 60, some of whom were forced to stand. The highway is considered one of the 15 most dangerous in Mexico. =O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O= Liberia's police have begun enforcing a new street trading ban by setting fire to stalls in the eastern Paynesville district of the capital, Monrovia. Traders reported that police officers burnt their stalls in the early hours of the morning. The ban is supposed to ease traffic congestion in Monrovia, where thousands of people fled during the 14 year civil war. =O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O= The environmental pressure group Greenpeace claims the UN has grossly underestimated the health effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Official UN figures predicted 4,000 extra cancer deaths attributable to Chernobyl's radioactive fallout. But Greenpeace claims recent studies estimate an extra 100,000 cancer deaths. The explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in 1986 spread a cloud of radioactive particles across a huge area of western Europe. Several million people still live in contaminated areas. Greenpeace has acknowledged that more research needs to be carried out to determine the final impact of the disaster. =O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O= The Chad government has retracted its threat to expel 200,000 Sudanese refugees but has closed the border with Sudan following a series of rebel attacks. More than 200 people have been killed and injured in a week of attacks on Chadian towns by rebels seeking to overthrow Chadian President Idriss Deby. The president has repeatedly blamed Sudan for backing the rebels. The border closure threatens the distribution of food aid to 400,000 displaced people who are living in camps across the border in Darfur. =O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O=O= A Serbian war crimes prosecutor is investigating 10 Kosovo Albanian rebels for alleged war crimes during the 1999 conflict. The prosecution is looking at three separate incidents in which two people went missing and two others were seriously injured and robbed in western Kosovo. The victims were Serbs, ethnic Albanians and Gypsies. About 10,000 people, mostly ethnic Albanians, were killed during the Kosovo war. Kosovo Albanian rebel troops have also been accused of kidnappings and killings of hundreds of Serbs and other non-Albanians during the conflict and after the pullout of Serb troops in 1999.
