Mayor Emanuel says he's sorry.

I'm Charlie Meyerson with your Chicago Public Square Newscast.

The mayor's apologizing to Chicago Public School students who've been sexually abused by teachers, coaches and staff—abuse thoroughly documented in an investigation by the Chicago Tribune. But he told the Sun-Times' Fran Spielman Tuesday the buck doesn't stop with him:

(( ))

But the mayor seems at a loss for ideas on fixing the system that let those abuses happen:

And his challengers seem not ready to let him off so easily. In a brief campaign video, Troy LaRaviere compares the administration's reaction to the way it responded after video of a brutal police shooting became public:

Similar criticism from other candidates: Lori Lightfoot says, "A raging forest fire was burning and still the mayor … took no definitive action."

Illinois' disgraced and convicted ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich is going for it. His lawyers have asked President Trump to end his 14-year sentence on corruption charges after just six years. It's a formality, and not even required—but it gives the president some ammunition if he decides to go pursue his idle suggestion last month that he might grant the governor clemency.

Counting on Medicare to get you through your old age? If you're planning on living another eight years, you might wanna have a plan B. The program's trustees report that, as present funding stands, Medicare will run outta cash by 2026. (And Social Security will run out another eight years after that.)
