A well-regarded experimental musician for some time, Eiko Ishibashi broke through into fame with her score for Ryusuke Hamaguchi's 2021 film Drive My Car, a significant part of the critically acclaimed film. As a follow up, Hamaguchi planned to develop a half hour silent film called Gift that could be used as a vessel for another Ishibashi score - the project sprawled out beyond that, and eventually became the 2023 film Evil Does Not Exist. However, in addition to the more conventional film that was developed, a 70-minute silent cut was produced that's closer to the original intention, and that cut has occasionally been presented with Ishibashi performing the score live in concert. And that's what was presented to us on a Monday night at the Melbourne Recital Centre, a very upper middle-class environment for a cultural performance.

Normally I wouldn't offer a disclaimer like this, but considering how important the visual element was for this performance I think it's worth clarifying: if you haven't seen the film, I would recommend that you do that instead of downloading this recording. This is partially because I screwed up and set my mic's level way too low - I had to amplify the recording by 15dB, so the range on this is not as good as it could be - but largely because it's a very good film and one that I greatly enjoyed watching, with the music as the background focus as it should be. I haven't heard it in studio (although when I caught Ishibashi last year, she was performing pieces from it in her set), but I wouldn't think that there's much improvisation involved in performing it live like this. It's a very nice soundtrack, full of unsettling drones and flute sounds, but it's at its best with the visuals behind it. If you do download, though, enjoy.
