Video: DREAM BUILD MTB - Specialized LEVO SL - Hannah Barnes

Finally, another Build & Ride Dream Build! It's been a long time since the last one!

"My custom Specialized 2021 Levo SL is one special bike! Specialized give some of their athletes and ambassadors the awesome opportunity to come up with their own frame artwork. I knew right away that the bike I wanted to do this with was the Levo SL. I first heard all about this new bike being a super light-weight e-MTB, looking and handling like a stump jumper, but with just enough power to really bring a whole new dimension when both climbing and descending, not to mention the endless possibilities it gives for longer trail rides where a bit of power gets you to those further afield harder to reach places. Sounds good to me! I joined the bike launch in Stellenbosch, South Africa, back in January. I was immediately hooked. I couldn’t believe it was an e-bike, so light and nimble, a super smooth and responsive motor which you forget is there until you turn it off and realise how fast you were going before. I also love the fact that if you do run out of battery power, or want to ride without assistance, the motor leaves no resistance. For those longer rides, there is the Range Extender which sits in the bottle cage and boosts the range by 50%. This bike has it all and really does feel like the future!

The Levo SL is indeed magical, so I wanted to bring some magic to the art work to really add that little bit extra. There is nothing more magical than the Northern Lights, so that was the working theme. I also wanted to include trees, beautiful and silhouetted against the sky like they are on a bright moonlit winters night. Shooting stars on the rear triangle, in pink, just seemed to work with the turquoise main colour, and I always like to add a splash of pink where I can! A night sky needs a moon, so a moon on the back of the seat tube was made using holographic foil. The turqoise sky section uses white metallic flakes to sparkle and resemble a glistening night sky.

Whilst I came up with the inspiration and ideas for how I wanted the art work to look, but the real work was done by Kayla Clarot, Specialized’s Graphic Artist. Kayla brought all my ideas to the drawing board, came up with a selection of different artwork options, and we fine tuned my favourite one. This is the third bike artwork we’ve worked on together, it is always a really fun process and exciting to see what gems Kayla comes up with.

The frame was painted in Italy by Lumar Colors, who do an incredible job, and are responsible for some of the coolest bikes out there!
