This 38th issue of the serial was published on July 20th, 1880. In this issue, "The Moral Pirates" decide to sail at night to avoid the day's heat and have a terrifying encounter in the darkness in the eighth part of their story; little Dot Calliper finds she's not the only creature picking blueberries on the mountainside in "The Biggest Blackberry Picker"; and, Dora and Gil Norman take an unexpected hay ride in "How Gil Played Ventriloquist". Other highlights of this issue include a how-it's-made-style description of pearls in "Pearls -- Real and Imitation"; a natural history of amazing "Beetles" from around the world; and, the second part in "The Story of the American Navy" which describes some of the naval battles of the Revolutionary War.
