Our first segment deals with a land use issue we haven’t covered before---Flushing, Queens, which is the focus of a controversial city-designated Special Waterfront District that will primarily benefit a consortium of private developers. But, Flushing has been undergoing gentrification and displacement for more than a decade. Between 2009-2019, thousands of luxury and market rate units have been built--predominantly condos. According to the NY Times, the neighborhood experienced the second highest rate of condo construction in the city, just after Brooklyn’s Williamsburg. It’s also an area with a considerable dearth of open space, exacerbated by all the construction, and the Special Flushing Waterfront District will only make matters worse--especially because opponents believe the developers used flawed data on which to base what would meet the city’s Open Space requirement. With me are Seonae Byeon, lead housing organizer at the MinKwon Center for Community Action and Prof. Tarry Hum, chair of the Department of Urban Studies at Queens College-CUNY to help us understand what’s going on.
