Expanding on his October 2016 Atlantic article, "How the Democrats Killed Their Populist Soul," Stoller, a fellow at the Open Markets Institute and former senior policy advisor and budget analyst to the Senate Budget Committee, explains why authoritarianism and populism have returned to American politics for the first time in eighty years. The answer starts with the Jeffersonian understanding of political tyranny as a concentration of power. Today, it’s financial power that’s concentrated, and the country is experiencing its dire effects in a shrinking middle class and a loss of faith in democratic institutions. At the same time, however, there are steps we can take to create a new democracy.
