About
Anthony Trollope was one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. In 1861 he travelled throughout the Canadas and the United States in order to ascertain firsthand their customs, the various societies, the institutions and politics of this young country. It is tremendously interesting to hear his comments and rigorous opinions regarding everything from hotels to railway cars, living arrangements and habits. He is especially vocal when it comes to his thoughts on the Civil War. Throughout his narrative the attention to historical details is flawless. Many of you will no doubt disagree with some of Mr. Trollope's views, but I am confident you will thoroughly enjoy this compelling glance into mid-19th-century North America. - Summary by Celine Major
