1/41Chapter One, "Lucy"
Summary
Lady Audley's Secret is a novel by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, serialised in 1861–62 and published in three volumes in 1862. It became one of the best-selling books of the Victorian period and, with Wilkie Collins's work, defined the sensation novel.
The story begins when Sir Michael Audley, a widowed baronet in his fifties, marries Lucy Graham, a young governess admired by everyone in the Essex village where she works for her beauty, modesty and sweet temper. Meanwhile Sir Michael's nephew Robert Audley, an idle London barrister, runs into an old friend, George Talboys, who has just returned from the Australian goldfields with a fortune, hoping to reunite with the wife he left behind years before. Grief soon overtakes George, and Robert brings him to visit Audley Court, the family's old manor house. George then disappears without explanation. Robert, who has never taken anything seriously, finds himself unable to drop the question of what happened to his friend, and his inquiries lead him towards uncomfortable conclusions about people close to his family.
The novel is a fast-moving mystery that also questions Victorian ideals of femininity, marriage and respectability, as well as fears about madness and social class. It suits readers of Victorian fiction, domestic suspense and stories that look beneath a polished surface.
