[1/8] Introduction and Dramatis Personae
Don Carlos is a Dramatic Poem in 5 acts written by the German classical playwright and poet Friedrich von Schiller. It was first performed on stage in Hamburg in 1787.
The story is loosely based on the historical conflict between King Phillip II of Spain and his son and heir Don Carlos. But Schiller adds many fictional elements, in particular a love affair between Carlos and his step-mother Queen Elizabeth and the character of the Marquis de Posa who is depicted as a champion of liberty and religious tolerance, ideas more in line with the enlightenment thinking of the 18th Century than those of 16th century Spain.
This play is the basis for Giuseppe Verdi's opera Don Carlos. - Summary by Alan Mapstone
